Ensuring optimum drainage during the wet months

12 December 2024

When the autumn and winter months arrive, the importance of a well-functioning drainage system becomes even more apparent. Sports pitches are often subject to heavy rainfall during these weather conditions. Drainage pipes are installed under many pitches to allow excess water to drain away quickly and keep pitches playable during heavy rainfall.

Maintaining the drainage pipes is essential for a well-functioning drainage system.

Reduced flow
These drainage pipes are typically installed at a depth of around sixty centimetres and are surrounded by drainage sand. Over time, fine particles can build up in the pipes, reducing flow. This requires regular maintenance.

Why maintain now?
Autumn is the ideal time to flush and clean drainage pipes. The fields are wet, which ensures optimum capillary action in the drainage system. Carrying out this maintenance in good time will ensure that the drainage system remains reliable during the wettest months.

Frost tips
As well as rainfall, frost can also be a problem. Blockages that are not dealt with in time can freeze and cause further damage. Make sure your drains are clean and unblocked before the frost period.
